More May Days
We took Petunia to a playdate at a local park with other Italian Greyhounds ~
she wasn't much interested and sat in my lap the whole time.
When we got there, all the other dogs ran over to meet (smell:) her,
and I guess it was too much ~ and one lil' guy was crushing on her
and wouldn't leave her alone ~ maybe we'll try again next month.

First outdoor ride this Spring ~ so good to be back out after indoor Winter training!!
I finally switched the boys flannel sheets to cotton ~ May is way too late for flannel! And, finally got the drapes re-hung that Elliot accidentally pulled down this winter when he was jumping on the bed. :) I was trying to think of ways for a more calming bedtime routine, so with the drapes back to darkening the room, the crisp cotton sheets, a clean bathroom with all new brushes/floss/rinse, I go in each night and make sure their beds are made, spray the sheets with lavender, turn on soft-lighting, and I play relaxation music ~ they can't come in until it's all set and once they're in, they have to speak softly (no yelling:). And whoever finishes their brushing routine and gets to bed first, is the one who gets massaged first! They love it and feel like they're at a hotel and call it "spa time". I'm sure it will eventually wear off, but for now it's working. :)
We're still taking Petunia for her daily walks around the lake ~
it's by far the highlight of her day ~ she goes crazy when we say "lake"!
Sometimes we all go, but usually it's just me ~ it's one of my highlights too
especially if it's early morning, still quiet and cool. Enjoying the Greenway ~

(The over-sized glasses helped in hiding the shiner my right cheekbone got
when meeting up with Elliot's head at a very high speed, earlier in the week.:)
Where we saw plenty of these ~
Cicadas are back!
(quoted from our local paper)
Cicadas, cousins of the common “July Fly,” emerge like clockwork from the ground every 13 years. They’re about 1.5 inches long, with red eyes, black body, orange legs and clear wings with orange veining. They occur only in the Eastern United States, from the Gulf of Mexico to Maine. Generally, 17-year cicadas are northern and 13-year cicadas are southern. 20,000 to 40,000 cicada nymphs may emerge from the soil beneath just one large tree. That translates to hundreds of thousands on a single acre of mostly hardwood forest. While cicadas are partial to oak trees, they will hang out on other hardwoods, including sweet gum and hickory. You might find their carcasses any place. What's all that noise?! It’s a very large choir of males singing a mating call to attract females, you could call them “Johnny one-notes.” Each species sings the same pitch (C-sharp). If you’re hearing multiple notes, there is more than one species in the neighborhood. The sound is created by membranes vibrating on the male’s body. Cicadas are noisy, and some say they’re the loudest in the insect world. Multiplied by the millions, the sound gets downright deafening at close range, and you can hear it for miles. Since the next emergence won’t happen until 2024, we should enjoy the experience. :)
Enjoying the local Arts & Crafts Festival ~
until it started pouring! :)

Finally got around to sewing some summer house-dresses!!:)
For some reason, Petunia loves to lay all over my fabrics. :)

School Update ~ Poetry
We're down to the very last days of school ~
since the warmer days, it's been tough to get our work done inside ~
between the pool and gardening, it's so much more fun outdoors.

One of our subjects for May was poetry ~ we read a lot of poems,
and then I assigned the boys to write one of their own.
Elliot didn't care much for this assignment and fussed a bit,
so his brother helped him, hence the similarities. :)
They did such a great job! They told me that to get started,

they each picked one word and wrote a poem around that word.
This is what they came up with ~

Oh Socks
by Ethan
Oh socks, oh socks, where are my socks,
the ones I wear that have polka dots?
Socks, socks, where are my socks,
are they in the clock, I think not.
Oh socks, socks, there in the box.
My lost socks are in the box!
Cats
by Elliot
Cats, cats, where are my cats,
are they under a box or in my hats?
Or will they be under the bed
hiding from me?

Mother's Day Weekend

We spent the weekend in Asheville and had an amazing time ~
the highlight being Sunday at the Biltmore ~
so hard to put into words how incredibly beautiful it all was!
Miles upon endless miles of mountains, trees, trails, streams, waterfalls, flowers ~
Oh my the flowers!! The gardens, the roses, statues and cherubs ~ by far my favorite!
The most delicious-smelling and gorgeous blooms of every imaginable kind.
At one point I said to the boys, "This must be what heaven is like!"
We've been to Asheville a few times before,
We've been to Asheville a few times before,
but this was our first time seeing the Biltmore and all it's majestic glory ~
What a wonderful way to spend Mother's Day!
